New changes to the Dog Bite Law (Animal Control Act) have been passed  into law when Governor signed the bill at the end of July 2016.
It is now a crime to fail to cooperate with the animal control services, or hiding or disposing of a dog after your dog has bitten a person. The first violation is a class A misdemeanor  punishable of up to a year in jail and a $2,500.00 fine. A second violation has serious ramifications that include up to three years in prison and up to a $25,000.00 fine.
If you dog or cat bites a person the owner or person taking care of the animal must have the animal examined by a licensed veterinarian with in 24 hours of the bite. The dog will be confined, after the confinement if the dog is not already micro chipped and current on its shots, both must be done at the owners expense.
Make sure you document your dog bite injury with photos of your healing as it progresses and when you get your stitches out.  If you can get some pictures before the stitches are applied that is helpful to the case. As a general rule you should not settle a dog bite case with scaring until six months after the original dog bite attack.
